Stress from a job search? Take time away from the Job Search

Sometimes, when a person is searching for a job position, they can feel stressed. You may benefit from getting away from the job search for a while and doing an activity that you enjoy doing.

Here are some activities to consider.:

  • Hobby–look into doing a hobby that may interest you
  • Read something–read a book, magazine, or other documents
  • Movie–watch a film that interests you
  • Get involved–may get involved on a particular issue that interests you
  • Social connections–people are social animals; people are social beings; you may find it valuable to stay in contact with people. Social connections may help you with the stress you may have
  • Look up something positive–find positive news on the Internet. You can search on Google (or another search engine) with words like “Good news” or “Positive news.” You may get search results that allow you to read the positive news occurring in the world

In my opinion, you may often hear news coverage as negative rather than positive. You will hear about the bus driver who crashed their bus, killing seven people, rather than the bus driver who successfully and safely transported people for 30 years. If you want to read about positive stuff in the world, search for positive news on the Internet and see what you find.

  • Look on the Internet to learn more about a hobby or passion that interests you–you can look on the Internet to find a passion or hobby you enjoy. For example, you can learn more about astronomy if you enjoy astronomy as a passion
  • Comedy–laughter can improve a person’s mood. You may enjoy watching your favorite comedian or a comedy movie

In conclusion, you may experience stress in the job search. You may benefit from taking time away from the job search. You then can do an enjoyable activity to re-charge your energy before getting back into the job search again.

Unemployed: Ways to Deal with the Stress

Lose your Job: Now Unemployed

When you lose a job (be it a remote job or not) – you can enter a stressful time in your life. People may experience various emotions like surprise, sadness, loneliness, and anger. Here are some suggestions to deal with job loss:

Ideas to help with the stress

  • First, Help with the emotional loss – losing a job position can be stressful. Unemployment can rate as one of the high stressful events a person can have in their lives. You may find talking to a counselor, friend, or family member helpful in dealing with the stress.
  • Second, Think of jobs as temporary – be aware that positions are temporary – jobs begin, jobs end, and some jobs change over time. The thought that a job is temporary may lessen the intense emotions you may feel from a job loss.
  • Third, Unemployment insurance–You may qualify for unemployment insurance. Unemployment insurance may give you financial help while searching for another job. Check with your state unemployment program for specific details.
  • Fourth, Take advantage of career services – Take advantage of career services from sources like:
    • Your state workforce development office,
    • College university career office (if it applies),
    • Career expert from a non-profit (if it applies),
    • Private career expert.

If you are paying for a career expert, please evaluate the career expert to determine if that career expert is worth your time. I would recommend a pay-as-you-go arrangement with your career expert rather than pre-paying for services ahead of time. That way, if you no longer want to use the career expert, you can stop paying the career expert for services.

  • Fifth, Social network–when you have the stress of a job loss, social groups can help support you in your time of stress from your job loss.
  • Sixth, Health–can be helpful to stay healthy – you may look into doing exercises and eating healthy.
  • Seventh, Routines–people who work may have an established routine in their workplace; when people lose their job, people may lose a big part of their routine. People may find comfort in routine. Some ideas to create a routine can be:
    • (A) Job club–a job club is a group of people who help people with job loss. The job club may meet at a specific time (like the same day of the week)
    • (B) Meet with a group of friends on an established routine – meet at a specific time
    • (C) Eat at established times
    • (D) Meet with career experts at established times

In Conclusion, dealing with job loss can be stressful. Ideas expressed are some ways to deal with stress. I hope everyone’s job journey is quickly solved when dealing with unemployment.

Feedback: Way to Improve

When I get feedback on something, I have found that I can often improve doing that something.

The feedback I am thinking about is the feedback where you give suggestions to another person on ideas to improve. Examples of feedback could be: “Here are some suggestions to improve your resume,” or “Here are some suggestions to improve your application,” and so on. The suggestions still allow the person to decide if they want to use the advice or not.

When I searched for a job position, sometimes the only feedback I would get from a job search was a lot of rejections. I would not get any other type of feedback in a job search–like ways to improve a cover letter, ways to improve an application, or ways to improve an interview.

The job search itself would provide no additional feedback except for rejections.

I have sometimes found it helpful to get feedback from other sources – Some of the other sources can be:

  • Friends
  • Family
  • Career Coaches (or career counselors)
  • Career experts at the Workforce Development office
  • Feedback from a job club (a job club is a social club that helps people find job positions)
  • Career expert from career associations (a career association where members are from a particular profession)
  • Talk to people in the profession you have an interest in going into

In conclusion, I have found getting feedback in my job search could improve my job search. So, if you are having difficulty with your job search, consider getting feedback.

Benjamin Franklin – Effective no matter what your age

Going to post something a little different from talking about remote careers; going to talk about history this week.

Filmmaker Ken Burns Benjamin Franklin Series

Filmmaker Ken Burns had a recent grad documentary about Benjamin Franklin this past week on PBS.
The show series is two episodes for those interested in watching the show.
You can watch the episodes online at the following address:

Web site Address: https://www.pbs.org/kenburns/benjamin-franklin/#watch

The two episodes are:

(1) Episode 1 | “Join or Die” (1706-1774)

(2) Episode 2 | “An American” (1775-1790)

The show is an excellent show about Benjamin Franklin, and I would encourage anyone interested in American Revolutionary War history to watch the show.

Benjamin Franklin, an American Hero

Busy time of life for me, so I used a past post about Benjamin Franklin.

On July 4, the day we celebrate the United States Independence from England, people may think about the American Revolutionary War. I enjoy reading about the heroes of the American Revolutionary War. One hero of the American Revolution War I enjoyed learning more about is Benjamin Franklin–here was a hero who was an inventor, took part in the American revolutionary activities, and was a successful business owner.

Effective at any age

Benjamin Franklin was involved in many of the American Revolution activities at an age when people may consider a person no longer able to contribute or be effective in society; some examples are

  • 1776–Declaration of Independence (Benjamin Franklin was 70 years old)
  • 1776–Diplomat to France (Benjamin Franklin was 70 years old)
  • 1783–Treaty of Pairs–ends the American Revolutionary War (Benjamin Franklin was 77 years old)
  • 1787–United States Constitution Convention (Benjamin Franklin was 81 years old)

For me, Benjamin Franklin can be an example of what you can do, no matter your age. Regardless of what age a person may be, a person can be influential and contribute to society–just like Benjamin Franklin.

Way to Evaluate College Classes

You may decide to take college classes remotely to help you with a remote career you may want to pursue.
Here is an idea to evaluate time commitments for college courses.

Colleges (or universities) can vary in their policies; please evaluate your specific college to see if the ideas here will work for you.

College courses can vary in their time commitments. The same college courses taught by different college instructors may vary in their time commitments.

Students may have a choice in what classes they would like to take that would satisfy their course of study. Courses of study could be certificates, degrees, or other recognition for students taking courses.

College may offer the ability to sign up for a class; then drop a class before paying for it.

Colleges may provide students with a short evaluation period between when they sign up for the course and when they have to drop the course before paying for it. Students can use this evaluation period to decide if they want to take the course or not.

Syllabus

The syllabus is an essential document for a college class. The syllabus gives vital information about the college class. The syllabus can have information like grading policy, what materials will be covered in the course, and schedule when assignments are due.

If you have

  • Choice as to what college class you can take to fulfill a course of study (you have a group of courses you can choose from)
  • You can sign up for a course and drop it later without paying for it.
  • And you can pay for class books and other materials after deciding what classes you decide you want to take. You do not need the class materials right away.

If you have the above choices, you may want to consider the following idea:

You can sign up for more classes than you plan to take for that college term. You intentionally decide to sign up for more courses than what you plan to study for that college term; you intend to drop some college courses.

You can use this evaluation period to obtain information in two areas:

  • Syllabus – you can get the syllabus and see the course requirements.
  • Instructor teaching style – you can evaluate the instructor’s teaching style.

You then can have more information to evaluate a class. You can then decide what course works for you.

In conclusion, you may be able to use a short evaluation period between when you can sign up for a course and then drop the course before paying for the course. You can use this evaluation period to understand the time commitments for the course better.

Time Travel and Light Speed

Been a busy time of life for me; going to use a past post about science for this week.

Going to post something a little different from talking about remote careers; today like to talk about space.

I am not a physicist–and the mathematics of physics gets me lost–I do not understand the math.

I enjoy physics from an amateur (or lay-person) viewpoint. I enjoy learning about physics ideas that are believed to be true–but do not seem to make sense from my common sense perspective.

Time Travel is possible for the Future

One idea is dealing with time; from my personal experience, time travels into the future is impossible. Time goes at a steady pace in the future; the clocks go at the same speed. You may read about time travel in the world of fiction, but in the world of reality – time is consistently going at the same rate in the future. No matter what you are doing – the time clock moves simultaneously into the future.

So, when I hear science mention that time can travel at different rates in the future, this does not fit my common-sense observation of what I see–and it is one feature of physics that I enjoy.

Time can travel at different rates in the future when traveling at light speed (or come close to it).

Strange things can happen when a person can travel at light speed.

As I understand it, time can travel at different rates of speed going into the future. You cannot go back in time, but can travel into the future at varying rates of speed. If I understand it and the physics is correct, you can build a time machine going into the future but not the past.

(Not sure of the specifics dealing with the math; give an example to express an idea)

If you are traveling in a ship at light speed, you may believe that you were traveling for one day, while people on planet Earth would think that you were traveling for several years. Time travels at a slower speed inside the spacecraft than outside the spacecraft.

Time can travel at different rates into the future when going at light speed (or close to it).

One place on the Internet that explains this is from a science show called Cosmos by Carl Sagan. (It was a science program done in the 1980s).

YouTube has a video about this; you can find it at:

YouTube Title: Carl Sagan – Cosmos – Traveling – Speed of Light
YouTube Channel: carlsagandotcom
YouTube Video Address:

Sometimes fact is stranger than fiction. I hope people enjoy it.

Remote Job Positions: Source of Information

You may gain helpful information by looking at the remote job positions. Let us look at what useful information you may gain from remote job positions.

Knowledge of a specific opportunity

Most people know one advantage of a remote job position is knowledge of a specific job opportunity. The remote job position may allow you to earn income in a remote career.

Knowledge of the demand of a career

You may gain ideas of the demand in a career by evaluating the search results for job positions in that career from job sites. If a remote career produces many job positions from a job search, you may consider it a high-demand career. If a remote career produces few job positions (or none) from a job search, you may consider it a low-demand career. The number of job positions found in a job search may give ideas on how much demand exists in a remote career.

You may benefit from doing various job searches on different job sites. Limiting your job search to only one job site may give you a mistaken view of the demand for jobs in the remote career you are looking for.

Job sites can have different focuses. If you can learn about the remote career field you are interested in, you may know which job sites focus upon your remote career. You may understand a remote career field by reading career articles and informational interviews.

Skills needed for jobs in a particular remote profession

You may gain knowledge of some skills necessary to enter a remote career by looking at the job positions in that remote career. I suggest finding 5- 7 job positions that interest you in a particular remote career.

You can take this group of 5-7 job positions and evaluate the following questions:

  • What skills do you need in the job positions?

You can see in the job positions what skills you need.

  • How essential are the skills?

You can evaluate how critical the skills are by the number of times that skill is shown in the job positions you are evaluating. For example, let’s say you are evaluating seven job positions. You may consider a skill found in all seven jobs to be more critical than a skill found in only one job position.

You can list these skills on a piece of paper. You can evaluate what skills you have and what skills you may need to get additional training.

Consider Other Career Exploration Methods

You may consider other career exploration methods besides job openings in evaluating a remote career. Other career methods could include career articles and informational interviews.

In Conclusion

In conclusion, remote job positions may give you essential information in your job search. Remote job positions may provide information about opportunities, ideas on demand for a particular remote career, and skills needed to enter that remote career.

The Three C’s–Content, Communication & Connection

Classification Systems

Classifications can be a way to help a person organize information in a particular area; classifications can help a person understand a specific area better. You may find classifications in many places. For example, you may discover classification systems in books in a library, a folder in a file cabinet, or a file in a directory on a computer.

Different Remote Jobs

You can find many remote job positions; you may find many classification systems to describe remote jobs. Here is my attempt at a classification system to describe many remote job positions. I call the three C’s–Content, Communication, and Connection.

Content

These are remote job positions where the job focus is on a particular content. The job positions may focus on creating and editing specific content of some type or may deal with the content in their job positions. Content job positions have content as the center of their work activities. Examples of Content jobs could be:

  • Writer
  • Editor
  • Computer Programmer
  • Instructional Designer
  • Artist

Communication

Communication jobs focus on the transmission of information from one person to another. Often these jobs will have a person transmit information from one person to a larger group. Communication jobs can have feedback from people, so it is not entirely one-way communication, but the focus will be on the transition of information from one person to another. Examples of communication jobs are:

  • Teacher
  • Instructor
  • Presenter
  • Facilitator
  • Trainer

Connection

These are job positions where people will be in conversation (either talking or writing) with each other. People can converse in exchange for information, thoughts, and emotions. Often, connection jobs have conversations focused on accomplishing something. Connection jobs are usually one to one; or small group conversations. Examples of connection jobs are:

  • Counselor
  • Seller
  • Advisor
  • Customer Service
  • Medical Doctor
  • Attorney
  • Accountant
  • Consultant

The three C’s–Content, Communication, and Connection are a way to organize many remote job positions. Remote job positions may belong to many categories. For example, a remote job may teach a class (Communication) and create a written document (Content). A remote job may belong to many categories of the three C’s: Content, Communication, and Connection.

In conclusion, people may have different ways to organize remote jobs. People may have other classification systems to organize remote employment. I have a classification of remote jobs by the three C’s–Content, Communication, and Connection.
