LinkedIn is a social media site that focus on career and job topics; a social media on careers, jobs and other related topics.
One feature of LinkedIn web site is the ability to create a profile; you can create a screen that will list career topics in areas like:
- Your work history
- Information about yourself
- Education history
- Skills
- Publications
- The groups you belong to
(Groups are people who come together related to a particular similar interest; like occupations)
- Articles – read articles about careers. You can read articles from other people and write articles yourself.
You can make your profile public where everyone can see the profile. The public profile can serve as a bulletin board where you can advertise yourself to potential employers. Ideally, a recruiter would see your profile bulletin board and contact you for potential job opportunities.
When writing your profile, you will want to give your profile a selling angle viewpoint. You want to communicate how you can help a potential organization rather then communicating how a potential organization can help you.
Example of How Not to Write a LinkedIn Profile
Below is an example how not to write a LinkedIn profile.
The profile was called “Fake False Fraudulent Fictitious Fred”
I used the profile to show students in a class I taught at the Omaha Public Library (in Omaha, Nebraska public library)
A class that focused on how to use the Internet to find job opportunities.
The class was done many years ago.
I cannot find the profile anymore; but here is the text of some of the profile

Have you tried an activity and were not successful at it and you do not know the reason why?
You could do activities like:
- shooting a basketball at a basketball hoop and not being successful in making baskets
- try cooking a complicated food dish and not cooking the food right
- you drive in a city and you are lost and cannot find the location you are looking for
- you try to solve a hard scientific problem for class and you cannot find the solution
You may have situations that despite your best efforts, you cannot figure out how to be successful with that particular activity. How do you find solutions to situations that you do not know how to solve?
You find a coach who can provide you feedback.
Often in the job market, a person will be in the process of applying for job positions; and the person receives feedback being:

You will get the result of No, but you will not get any feedback as to why you are not being successful. A coach may be able to give you feedback on what you are doing well and what you are not doing well.
A career coach may have other titles like career counselor.
Where do you find a career coach?
Some places that you can find a career coach can be:
- Non-profit organizations (Goodwill is an example of a Non-Profit that can provide career coaches to help people) (Goodwill is at https://www.goodwill.org/)
- State Workforce Development office – a state workforce development office may provide career experts for you (check with the state you are in).
You may be able to use a state workforce development office in a state you are not a resident; you may find another state workforce development office may have services that work for you.
- Colleges/Universities – college/university help their students and alumni with their career goals; a college/university may help the public (contact a college and/or university on their policies in helping the public).
- Private Sector- you hire a career coach for the private sector
Pay for sessions as you have them; do not pre-pay
If you pay for a career coach, one idea I would suggest is that you do a pay-as-you-go-arrangement. You pay for the sessions that you see the career coach. I would recommend not pre-paying for a collection of sessions ahead of time; you may decide that you do not like the services that you are receiving from the career coach. You may risk the danger of paying for a service that you decide not to use.
You can try a career coach and the career coach does not work for you; you can try a different career coach. Sometimes a career coach can be a great professional; but sometimes the career coach and a client may not always be a good fit; so, a career coach may not work for you while that career coach may work for someone else.

People may have many different influences when deciding upon a career; a person may choose a career based upon
- the pay
- the location
- the benefits
- the schedule
- the prior personal connection to a particular location
- the mission of the organization
- the geography of where the organization is located
There can be many different influences that may influence a person career decision.
One particular influence can be pain.
Sometimes a person may have difficulty doing a particular activity that may create pain for the person. A person will likely want to avoid doing that particular activity that creates pain. A person will likely want to be in a job position that will not contribute to their pain. For example, a person may have a back problem that limit a person from lifting above 10 pounds. A person would likely then want to find a job position that does not require a person to lift above 10 pounds
So how does one do a job search based upon the physical, how does one avoid job positions that may create pain? Here are some ideas that may be helpful

I also saying physical to mean both physical and mental difficulties that a person may have.
Get Expertise help
I think searching for a job position based upon the physical; is one of the more difficulty ways to search for a job. You are not going to find a job search engine that will allow you to separate job positions based upon the physical (or nothing I have seen). You are going to have a lot of stress dealing with both the physical issues and the job search. An expert may be able to for example give ideas on how to approach a potential employer with your physical difficulty.
Here some experts to look at:
- Medical Doctor – get medical advice on the physical difficulty that you have; specially, get medical advice on what you can do physically and what you cannot do physically. For example, you may have a bad back that makes lifting difficult, A doctor may be able to define the weight limit for your back. A doctor then may write written documentation for you
There are two advantages from
- First, your medical information will serve as evidence that you have a particular physical difficulty (a particular employer then may accept or be able to accommodate the physical difficulty)
- Second, you will have some idea of what job positions to search for. If a doctor says do not lift above 10 pounds, you can try to search for job positions that do not require lifting above 10 pounds.
- Career Experts
Try to find career experts who may be able to help you with searching for the physical. Some options could be:
- Vocational Rehabilitation – these are state offices that can help people with physical difficulties in helping to find a job position. Each state and Washington D.C. have vocational rehabilitation offices; you can do an Internet search typing in the state (or Washington D.C.) that you are interested in and then also type “Vocational Rehabilitation” to get more information
- Career Coach – a career coach may be able to give you advice on the physical; career coach may be able to help you search for job positions that may not give you pain.
Other ideas
- Social group – when you are searching for a job position based upon the physical; you are doing to be having enough stress; your social group can help you in giving you support and second your social group may be able to network for you in finding job positions once you have some ideas of what job positions you like to look at.
- Physical and/or mental career associations that focus upon a particular difficulty. The association may be able to give career information that can be helpful for people. For example, the National Association of the Deaf helps give career information to deaf people.

- Informational Interviews – a informational interview is a way you can talk to people in the profession that you are interested in going into; an informational interview may be a way that you can learn more about the physical area in a particular profession
- Occupational Outlook Handbook – the Occupational Outlook Handbook is a government publication that comes out every two years; the Occupational Outlook Handbook gives information on many different career fields. You can go to the Occupational Outlook Handbook and sometimes gain some knowledge of the physical activities needed for that career.
Go to https://www.bls.gov/ooh/ – the Occupational Outlook Handbook
You can then search for career fields by keyword search and by category
You can then go into a particular career field and then choose “Work Environment” section of a particular career
- Job position itself – sometimes the job position itself can sometimes give details on the physical; I will often see this on job descriptions from larger organizations
- You may often not know the physical features of a job position when you are first applying for the job; you may find it valuable to apply for jobs that you are not sure about, and then learn more about the job in a job interview and/or job offer. You can then better evaluate the job once you learn more about it. (again, I would suggest using an expert to gain guidance on how best to approach a potential employer with your difficulty)
Own Business
No one know you better than you. You may want to consider owning your own business (either full or part time). You are in full control of how to do the tasks; this can be advantage for some people who may need to have work adjustments but they can do the work adjustments for themselves with their own business. Some ideas of where to start a business could be:
- Score.org – score.org an organization of volunteer business people who can help people start and grow their business. Score.org is connected with the Small Business Administration.
- Small Business Administration – https://www.sba.gov/ a federal government agency that can give you information on starting and growing your business.

Have you ever watched a racing event? Have you watched runners running the 100-meter dash and the marathon race? I see both races during the Olympics. The 100-meter dash race would be 100 meters and the marathon race would be 26 miles 385 yards.
Have you noticed the racing strategies for each race would be different for each runner? The 100-yard dash a runner will go as fast as the runner can. The runner will go at full-seed to complete the race. The runner can go at a fast rate of speed for the race is short. The runner is likely not going to need to go at a slower rate of speed to have the energy reserve to continue the race. The 100-meter race can be completed quickly. The fastest 100-meter race is Usain Bolt at 9.58 seconds in the men race. The fasters 100-meter race is Florence Griffith Joyner at 10.49 seconds in the women race. The Marathon race will have runners going at a fast race of speed. Marathon runners will not go as fast as they can as they will need a reserve energy bank to allow them to complete the long race. The faster race for a marathon has been Eliud Kipchoge at 2:01:39 for men and for women has been Brigid Kosgei at 2:14:04. Marathon runners will go at a slower speed to allow them to compete and complete a longer race.
Typing speed could be descried in two different speeds. You could have the typing test be the 100-meter dash. And the typing speed at a job position could be the marathon.
You may set yourself for physical problems with your hands if you approach the typing test as a 100-meter dash rather than a marathon race. If you go as fast as you can in the typing test and then expect to have that same speed for typing in the entire work day; you may be setting yourself up for injury for your hands. Your hands may not have the energy reserves to be able to go through the entire marathon race of a work day if you are at a 100-meter race speed. Approach the typing test as if you are doing a marathon – attempt to go at a speed you think you could go throughout the entire day. Go typing marathon speed instead of typing 100-meter dash speed.
My opinion
The following is my opinion about the following events; thanks for reading.
You may have heard about the events that have occurred in Washington D.C. Much content has been created about the past week – much of the content better created than what I can compose. Those involved in the capitol fiasco should be held responsible. In my own personal opinion, President Trump should be impeached and removed from office. I tend to be a liberal in my political beliefs but I will take the most conservative core person to be in political office who follows a traditional political sports playbook. Some of these traditional political sports playbook rules are
- Respect for others opinions (people can have different opinions)
- Respect for your political opponents (your opponent not your enemy but your opponent much like in sports),
- Respect for laws,
- And respect for election results

Flex jobs is a specific job site that focus on job positions that are remote. Flexjobs a useful resource site to find telework remote jobs. You do have to sign up for a subscription service to use the resource. I believe it is a good resource.
- General job sites –Job Web sites on general jobs; General job web sites focus on a wide collection of jobs. Jobs could be an electrician to a teacher. You can search for remote online jobs by doing a search that has two features:
(1) Search for jobs in your career field
(2) Search for remote online jobs
For some search engines, this can be typing in terminology that expresses you interest in remote online jobs. Some of the terminology could be
Telecommute
Teleworking
Telework
“Work at home” (search as a phrase often put quotes around it)
“Word from home” (search as a phrase often put quotes around it)
Virtual
Remote
Mobile
Anywhere
You may be able to put the word “remote” in the location square in a search in a general job site. General job sites like www.indeed.com and www.linkedin.com you have the option of typing in the word “remote” in the box location in the search job database.
You may find a remote online job for your particular profession
Federal government – federal job positions describe remote jobs as “telework”
You can use a website called Usajobs.gov to access job positions in the federal government.
You an access telework job positions by applying telework as a filter feature. A person will use a filter when a person obtains a large job choice list. A person may have a job choice list with many job positions that a person may not want. A person may find it helpful to reduce the job choice list to obtain a more focused job list. A person may find a job they are looking for from a focused job list. A filter can help reduce the job list and get a more focused job search.
To use the telework filter you need to first conduct a search.
You can type in a search in the keyword box and then (hopefully) you will get a job list.
You can then use the telework filter.
You can click “More filters” option on the right site of the screen.
You will then get a menu of options you can select “Offers telework”.
Your job list will then be reduced by the telework filter.
You can see the telework option in the job description by looking at the “Location” section in a job description. The Location section will have the phrase “Telework eligible: Yes as defined by agency policy”.

Update your skills
You may be able to be a student; you may be able to go to a college and/or university to obtain new skills. You may then be able to take classes remotely in online classes.
I particularly like Community Colleges – they may be able to offer you courses that can be less cost than what can be found at 4 years colleges and universities
Totally remote or partially remote
You may not be able to tell from the job description if the job is completely remote where you do not go into an office. Or the job position may be partly remote where you will go into an office from time to time. You could apply for the job position; and then find out about the remote policies at the time of the interview.

So, 2020 not been the best year around, if look for possible positive features of the year; some of the positive features of the year could be
- Expansion of the digital – the Internet was able to create many more digital connections with people; my guess is that many of these digital expansions will still be there; giving people additional choices in areas like
- Work
People may be able to gain work remote opportunities
- Education
Educational choices have expended in the digital world. People will have more expanded options of where they would like to obtain an education through the digital world
- Socialization
Socialization opportunities may increase with more digital connections. Social webs sites may offer meetings that are done online allowing people to attend worldwide regardless of distance
- Professional services
People may have increase access to more professional services that were not offered online; people may be able to access a particular coach for example who may not have been accessible before the pandemic.
- Advancement in science – there has been an increase in science; learning more about how diseases work and this knowledge may be helpful in going against other diseases in the future
- Appreciate what you have – you may have an opportunity to value what you do have
- Find joy in the usual – when we get back to usual in 2021 – you may be able to take joy from activities that were just routine and usual before the pandemic.
Some of these usual and routine activities could be
- going to shops
- going to restaurants
- going to sporting events
- going to concerned
The big live events with people will be able to occur again

Often to be a lawyer in the United States, you have to go to law school and then pass the state bar exam. However, for those who may not care where they live in the United States a few states will allow people to become lawyers without going to law school. There are four states in particular they are – California, Virginia, Vermont and Washington. A lawyer apprenticeship is where you practice under an existing attorney who shares and teaches a person about the law. The apprenticeship will then allow you to take that state bar exam. Be aware that taking a bar exam successfully in one state mean you can only practice law in that particular state; you cannot practice law in another state.
California has the California’s Law Office Study Program that may help people become lawyers without going to law school for those who wish to be attorneys in California.
You may also want to supplement your learning experience with a lawyer apprenticeship be taking law classes (either paralegal or lawyer) to obtain knowledge from a classroom. Community colleges near you may provide legal classes at low-cost in your area.
Please do your own research to see if this area works for you; this information intended to make people aware of the program and people can then do follow up research to see if lawyer apprenticeships will work for them.
Please check with the law bar association of the state that you are interested in becoming a lawyer for more information; and then you can decide if a lawyer apprenticeship is an option that you would like to pursue.
