Learning from YouTube: Using Closed Captions

This week, I am adding some additional detail to last month’s post about using YouTube videos to learn new concepts and ideas.

If you are watching a YouTube video like a course and taking notes to help learn the material, you may find it helpful to turn on the CC button.

CC stands for closed captions. When closed captions are available, they display the words being spoken in the video on the screen.

Being able to both hear and read the information may make it easier to follow the material, take notes, and understand unfamiliar words or concepts.

Another advantage of learning from a YouTube video is that you can pause or go back in the video. If you don’t understand something the first time, you can review that section again before moving forward.

Closed captions, along with the ability to pause and review a video, are simple tools that can make YouTube more useful as a learning resource.
